Flight attendant Bobby Laurie blogs about life as an airline professional and shares struggles and joys in his debut book, 'Planely Speaking.'

Bobby Laurie dreamed of making it big in the entertainment industry but has found the next best thing for now, a career as a flight attendant. His career began four years ago and early on Laurie encountered odd passengers and strange experiences resulting in entertaining stories he shared with friends and family. Those close encouraged him to compile his stories into a book but Laurie opted to launch a blog in June 2009. A year later, the best of his blog has been compiled into the entertaining read, Planely Speaking: Inflight Insight from Thirty Thousand Feet.

Inside Look into Planely Speaking

Readers hoping to discover airline secrets revealed by a disgruntled employee will be disappointed. Bobby Laurie truly enjoys his deceptively glamorous job as a flight attendant and some stories share his concern for passengers while others demonstrate how unruly they can be.

Stories also provide insight from a flight attendant’s perspective and after reading his book, air travelers will have a better understanding and appreciation for the work flight attendants endure. For instance, Laurie explains most flight attendants begin earning their pay once the airplane’s cabin door is closed, not once they report for duty. Those considering a career as a flight attendant will find this book useful as they prepare for the application, interview and training process.

Blog Posts Converted to Book Chapters

Chapters are based on blog posts and although they were edited to fit a book format, stories read like a best friend’s journal. Author Bobby Laurie is humorous, compassionate and likeable. He doesn’t sugarcoat experiences and shares struggles of the job but overall, positivity radiates throughout Planely Speaking.

Planely Speaking is a quick, yet enjoyable read leading readers on a turbulent journey of emotions including joy, anger and empathy. The book’s only downside is the editing such as “thought” used in a sentence rather than “though.” But, just as one disregards a best friend’s typos in something they write, these are forgivable to overlook because the book’s content is entertaining and informative.
